Often when I'm on my PS3, whether I'm playing a game or on the browser, it freezes. I have to physically flip the switch on the back of the system just to turn it off. I heard that when it freezes its better to hold down the power button until it beeps twice, but that doesn't seem to be fixing the problem. When i've explained this to people they describe it as "lagging out" which makes sense since it only seems to happen during online gameplay or when browsing the internet. I thought it was just a commun thing (maybe it's just overheating?) but now it's starting to get ridiculous... happening at least once a day. I've had the ps3 for about a year and a half now so the warranty is over.
Can I get it fixed/replaced (similar to Xbox's RROD) Or maybe there's a way to fix it myself if that's not possible?
Thanks, all help is appreciated.

If it's the game that freezes during online play it very well may be 'lagging out' as they say. This is not a problem with your PS3 in this case, it's a problem with your connection to the server you're playing on. Usually this is caused by the speed or quality of your internet connection.

I use a direct ethernet connection, so there should not be connection issues.
I play Socom: Confrontation & Modern Warfare 2 online & they both freeze, but as I said not only games but also the internet browser.

Using a direct ethernet cable connection does not determine the speed of your internet/network. It comes from your internet service provider. There are various types of internet out there (eg. DSL or Hi-speed), all with various different quality (depending on how much you wish to spend). All use an ethernet connection somehow (whether that's directly from the modem to whatever you are using, or from the modem to a router). What type of internet do you have?
Does this problem only occur when you are playing games/browsing online, or does it happen all the time, on or offline?

Sounds like you play alot of multiplayer type games so Im not sure if you want to do it or not but at least it will solve your problem. UNPLUG your ethernet cable and play a few single player games for a few hours or as long as it takes to see if the system still freezes (It may freeze within the first 10 minutes who knows?) this way you can be more sure of where the problem lies instead of guessing. You could always reformat your PS3's hard drive as well and see if that helps, just be sure to backup any data you want.
If your games are not freezing while you have the ethernet cable unpluged or are still freezing after formating then I would point the issue towards your router, Modem or the cable , no matter what ISP(Internet Service Provider) your with it shouldn't be constantly losing connection the odd time posssibly but not the way your describing.

I've been playing Army of Two the 40th day (offline) & have had no issues with freezing whatsoever, and i've got about 13 hours on it so far. Not sure if this has anything to do with it, but I did a connection test and it says my NAT Type is 2. It also says that it can affect online play? I have MTS high speed internet and wireless. How it works is we have the cable box & router down stairs, and every bedroom with a tv has a tv cable going into it from the cable box. the cable plugs into another little box that has it's own ethernet connection. that's what i use.
Can I backup my installed games & PlayStation Network games? Because I don't want to re-install my disk-based games nor can I lose the PSN games since I lost the account information that I bought them on. I'm assuming I can't I'm sure Sony has that blocked.
thanks for the quick reply

Apparently there's a recall on PS3's for a clock bug? Sony is working on it atm.

Nah, there's no recall and that clock bug has fixed itself (literally). It was caused by a stupid mistake made by someone at Sony, making the PS3's BIOS believe that 2010 was a leap year...
To the OP, what I've read so far seems to suggest that your problem isn't coming from your PS3 but from PSN or your service provider. I had this problem once while playing SFIV online but never had any problem with the same game, playing offline with friends.
As how you can fix your problem, for now, I have no idea, sorry. I know it's probably not related to your NAT 2 connection as it could be far worst (you could have NAT 3 like I do)

My PS3 freezes too occasionally, online and offline. I play most of the time online but my PS3 freezes usually while I am playing offline. So we have the same problem but opposite... I don't know how to fix it but I reccommend shutting it down when its frozen by pressing and holding the power button on the front until it beeps and then the green light will flash for a bit and then it will turn off (standby). flipping the switch at the back is basically like unplugging it and you might lose saves. I'm pretty sure that by doing the method i metioned above, when the green light flashes, it is making sure data is not lost. Anyways, if you find a solution please reply because even though it doesn't freeze all of the time, it still annoys me!!!
Thanks.
