Re: how do I need to input ps3 to LCD moniter?

The easiest way is to use a monitor that has an HDMI port and use an HDMI cable. :smileywink:

But if your monitor does not have an HDMI port, then you will want to look at what connectors it does have.

If it has a DVI connector, then you can use an HDMI to DVI converter(this removes the audio though, so you'll need to use an audio cable for the PS3 to some sort of speakers).

If the monitor only has VGA(or D-Sub), you will have to look for cables or devices to convert the output from the PS3 to a VGA connector.  The only thing  I've seen at Futureshop that will work for this is a TV Tuner on your computer.  You would connect the PC to the monitor as normal, the TV Tuner to your PC, and the PS3 to your TV Tuner.  If you choose this route, I would recommend one such as the ATI TV Wonder HD 650 Combo USB TV Tuner.

If your monitor has DVI-D then use a HDMI to DVI-D convertor and simply plug your HD cable to it, these convertors vary in price but shouldn't cost more then $20. If you don't have a spare pair of speakers, take the speakers from your computer, use the analogue PS3 cable to RCA and use an RCA to 3.5mm jack socket adapter so you can plug your speakers to it, these adapters cost about $3-$5.

If you don't have a DVI-D connection on your monitor and only VGA, then you will have to find a device like a PC to TV box (about $30-$50) which consists of a VGA to Composite adapter, or you could buy a VGA to HDMI adapter but these are very expensive.

Question:

My Monitor doesn't say weather its DVI or VGA... How do I know which it is? It's blue if that helps.

That means it is VGA.  Does it also have a white connector at the back?  If so, it also takes DVI, in which case all you would need is the HDMI to DVI converter that roparadi suggested and a HDMI cable.

It has nothing else, just the power cable and the vga.

But hdmi to vga is so expensive.

Must be a very early model of LCD monitors then.  I have a couple of monitors that are six-seven years old and they have DVI-D connections at the back in addition to the VGA connection.

What model is your monitor?

I've recently picked up a PS3 myself, and I realized something.  The PS3 will only play video from the HDMI port on the console if a HDMI cable is plugged into a port that is HDCP (High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection) compliant.

Not every DVI port is HDCP compliant, so not every monitor will be able to output video from a PS3 using a HDMI to DVI adapter like Rob has suggested.  If yours is older, chances are you won't be able to get a direct video connection from your PS3 to the monitor.

You will more than likely have to go with Rob's suggestion about a TV Tuner, but then you will be limited to composite video.  However, that is better than nothing, and should definitely do until you can get either a newer monitor or a HDTV.
