i have hooked up my ps3 but once i use the ps3 remotre control to to start the movie or game it does not work,it is the old remote from the old ps3 do i have to but a new one

The controller for an old PS3 will still work for a new one. Initially you have to connect it with a usb cable to the new system though, if only for a brief moment so that it recognizes the new system and vice versa. Have you done this yet? If you haven't (and assuming your games/movies are just autorunning when you pop them in), it may seem like your controller is turning on, but it's not syncing to the new system. Plug it in via USB.

If you are using the controller to start the game/movie though, then obviously it's working to that extent. That seems really odd that the controller would work in the menu screen but not when the game starts.... Is the controller holding a charge, and have you tried keeping the controller connected via the USB cable and seeing if it works?
