3D ready?

With Boxing Day sales just weeks away just before the Olympics, I'm debating about getting a new TV.  However what makes a TV 3D ready?  Is it just a 120hz or higher refresh rate?  Or would the 3D signal mess up the refresh engine as it would try to smooth the left and right vision into one image.

Re: 3D ready?

Only HDTVs that are specifically labelled as being "3D Ready" will support this new technology since the TV's entire display system needs to be designed to support it. To the best of my knowledge, the most complete list of "3D Ready" TVs and monitors currently available can be found at http://www.3dmovielist.com/3dhdtvs.html

Re: 3D ready?

Thanks for the quick reply and link..... Looking at the Future Shop website, it appears only a 22" product is labeled as 3D ready.... http://www.futureshop.ca/catalog/proddetail.asp?logon=&langid=EN&sku_id=0665000FS10126114&catid=2507...

Indeed, there is not much in the way of product out there yet. Likely over the next year or so that situation with change. What remains to be seen is whether or not this whole idea is going to be commercially successful.

To view 3D, aside from 3D glasses, would you not need this set paired with that Samsung monitor?

Re: 3D ready?

Yes, you do also need to wear "3D glasses" in order to view in 3D, in addition to a monitor or HDTV designed specifically for the purpose of showing 3D source programming. I think having to wear these glasses, in addition to the extra cost and the slow introduction of 3D source programming, are going to be major obstacles to making 3D something that most consumers will want to buy in to.

Re: 3D ready?

I remember reading somewhere the Sony PS3 is 3D ready.  I have no objections to wearing googles to get the effects.

While 3D video and films are limited.  I wonder how 3D compuer games are selling?  Are they popular?

Re: 3D ready?

Thats interesting how it looks like the way 3D tvs work is by having shutter glasses and a HDTV that is capable of processing frame rates at 120Hz+. How do you explain to someone who just bought a 120Hz+ HDTV in 2008 or 2009 that their tv though it fits the spec is not compatible. It should be an easy fix for the TV manufactures to update the tvs firmware to allow the sync device be be plugged into the USB port of the tv to sync with the glasses and there you go working 3D TV. I mean Sony's Playstation 3 is coming out with firmware to allow 3D on existing hardware... But this is how the industry works. Now people have to pay money all over again to get the same thing people already have. So I'd like if someone can explain why a 240Hz LCD HDTV bought in 2009 is not 3D compaible with current 3D tvs which also do 120/240Hz.

Re: 3D w/o glasses

Have a look these new developments where you won't need glasses in the coming years.
