Change my 42" LED Insignia.

Hi everyone,

I recently bought a 42" LED Insignia with 1080p and 120hz. Unfortunalety, I'm not satisfied with the picture quality, especially with blacks which are not deep enough.

I'd like to return this TV and exchange it for a TV of about the same size and price (40 - 42"). I've been thinking about the Sony Bravia 40" LCD with 1080p at $569, without the 120hz (that I don't really care about). Here is a link: http://www.futureshop.ca/en-CA/product/sony-sony-bravia-40-1080p-lcd-hdtv-kdl40ex400-black-kdl40ex40...

Could you please tell me if this is a wise choice, or make some suggestions.

Thanks!!

Re: Change my 42" LED Insignia.

You'll definitely be pleased with the Sony's performance. You can also check out the 42" LG LCD which competes directly with the Bravia. It boasts a 80,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio, so true "blacks" shouldn't be an issue.

I personally like the LG due to its minimal border. The Sony however has 4 HDMI inputs whereas the LG has 2.

You'll be pleased with either. Enjoy your new set!

I think I actually prefer the design of the Sony TV.

However, and I don't know if this is a significant difference, the LG is a 42", and the Sony is a 40".

Do you think this may be an important consideration, as I will mainly use this television to plug my computer via HDMI?

Maybe I should have mentionned before that I plan to use this TV mainly to watch movies from my computer....

EDIT: Someone has suggested on the French forum to get this Plasma TV, which is a little bit over my budget, but I'm still considering it and would like to know your opinion on it > TCP42U2

Thanks a lot!

Personal opinions of course!

Per your question, absolutely--Panasonic plasmas are well-regarded in the flat panel community. I would advise sticking to an LCD if the TV will be in a room with light coming in from other directions (i.e. windows, lamps...etc.). LCDs have a tendency to NOT reflect light as much as plasmas. If you're setting up an entertainment center in a dark room, Plasma should be a great choice.

NOTE: Given some newer plasmas have an anti-reflective coating, it's still a good general rule to follow.

As for inputs, 1 is enough if you plan to just use your computer.

Should you hook up a PS3 and HD cable box in addition to your computer, you should look to get around 3 or 4 HDMI inputs.

Like you, I play a great deal of movies off my computer and route it through to my TV/Sound system. If your computer has an HDMI output you're golden; however, if you only have a DVI output you'll need a DVI-HDMI cable and a separate output for sound (usually through the headphone jack).

S-video and VGA outputs will utilize different ports on your TV; but it's always good to have more HDMI ports to be prepared for whatever consoles/units you may decide to add in the future.

Re: Change my 42" LED Insignia.

Thank you for your great answer. It makes a huge difference when someone shares an actual opinion with you. Thanks so much for your input.

I'm taking note of your advise on reflection.

As far as computer to tv is concerned, fortunately i have an HDMI output on my computer. =)

I guess I will choose the LG or the Sony depending on what's available and what looks the best when I get to the store :smileyhappy:

Thanks a lot again!

I will, absolutely, although it may take a few days, as the Future Shop I'm going to apparently needs to order the new TV.

You're lucky to have an HDMI-out... makes life so much simpler.
