Is there a way to wire headphones to a HDTV through the RCA connecters at the back of the TV?

Electronic stores do sell rca headphone adapters that look like Y-connectors.

However depending on the TV model, some will offer volume control and others will not. If it doesn't work, you may need to get a receiver or amplifyer to do the job.

I'm not a sales rep to answer your question.... but in theory.... YES it would work.
Not sure how far you will be sitting from your TV. But my biggest fear is someone walking between the TV and you.... I've had situations where headphones were painfully ripped out of my ears and in one case broke the headphone jack in half from the back of a VCR. Needing needle noise plyers to remove the broken jack.
If you could get a longer cord and throw a carpet over it.... the situation would be less risky.
