I have had a dlp tv for three years and it just shut off while watching it. Is this a sign the bulb needs replacing or is the tv. broken?

Sounds like you blew the lamp bulb. When you try to turn it on there should be a blinking light, possibly the power light. The blinks are a code, call an authorized service center with the code and they should be able to tell you what happened.
