What type of cable are you using on your PS3? Is the cable fully connected and set in the HDMI port? Sometimes if a cable is loose, it can cause things like what you are seeing. More often than not it happens with the cheaper stuff.
I own the 40 inch EX500 and I have found that the ambient sensor tends to make the TV far too dark for my tastes. I keep the sensor off for all modes.
You never know, you might have a bad TV. It can and does happen, especially with mass-produced items. Can't get it right all the time.

The connection was the first thing i tested and it wasn't that im using the ps3 hdmi cable.the ambient sensor is only good for watching the tv in the dark imo.im going to try another hdmi port and see if it still does it if not then its probably a bad hdmi port.this is the tv i got http://www.futureshop.ca/en-CA/product/sony-sony-b
