Will I be able to watch newly upgraded digital channels on Shaw Cable by buying a new LCD TV.

To clarify...

• you were always able to watch digital channels.  What are "upgraded digital channels"?
• does your planned new LCD do 720p HD?  Does it do 1080i HD?
• does your Shaw box deliver HD?  Do you need a new box?

BTW... you "may" be able to get FreeHD with an ATSC antenna facing a window to your local broadcast tower.

The channels are A&E, Showcase, Discovery etc., i.e. Channels 30 and up. I used to be able to watch those on my old TV since the apartment building I'm in providing the cable service as part of the rent. The manager told me to get a new 'digital' TV to watch those channels instead of paying extra money to rent  a 'converter box' from Shaw.

So, which brand and what kind of new TV, Plasma, LCD, or LED , 720p, 1080p..., just too many choices, I should get?

Some ideas on where to start with the wizard....

• what is you budget?
• do you want 3D?
• are there brand you like or would like to avoid?
• how big would you like your TV to be?  Have you measured what is the biggest dimensions you want a TV to fit your room?  How close do you plan to be sitting to the TV?

The conversion your manager is talking about doesn't require you to get a new LCD t.v or anything. As long as you don't have a t.v that's super ancient, the conversion shouldn't affect you.

The easiest way to check, is if your t.v can do a scan for Digital channels *In the menu options, it should be there* then you have a digital t.v and won't need to buy a new one to continue to enjoy your t.v

The converter box your landlord is referring to is a box that is needed only for really old TV sets (prior to 2000) that don't support the upper digital channels.

However, it doesn't even necessarily mean that you will have any savings.  Rogers cable provides you with a 'free converter box' which they rent to you, but I don't think you have the option to turn it down even if you wanted to.  I think it is part of the service.

So to answer your question, any modern day TV would not require the converter box from Shaw for those channels that you mention.  If you are talking about PPV that may be a different case.
