a quick question

I am in the market for a flat-screen - 40 - 50 inches. My budget is around $1000 so I am wondering which set can give the best PQ and bang for the buck. I am open to both LCDs and Plasma. I would like to get the Sony PS3 too and connect my laptop to it occasionally. I will be using it in my living room in 1 BR condominium.

I would appreciate your feedback and recommendations. I would also like to know if it is worth buying the display [floor] models at good prices.

Thanks in advance!!!!

[ Edited ]

whats your take on the Samsung PNXXA450 series plasmas? They are priced under $1000 too or is is it better to get the LNxxA550 series LCD?

PS and also how does the Sony S4100, which has 24p, compares?

I like Panasonic and Pioneers in plasmas.  For some reason I'm not a big fan of Samsung plasma.  But that is just me.

However in LCD I think Samsung is the way to go.  Sony's are typically overpriced, especially at the lower end of the model line ups.  You are paying for the name - little else.  A quick comparison of the specs on the A550 and the most obvious advantage is 5ms response time versus 8ms on the Sony.  If you are gaming with the PS3 this is a deal breaker for the Sony.

Based on the recommendations, i get that Samsung is the way to go for LCD esp the entry level ones. Btw, I checked out the LG 42LG50 and liked it too. how would it compare with others in terms of PQ and built quality?

If I had to choose between LG and Samsung, Sammy would win every time.  I am not a fan of LG when it comes to TV's.  I find I can see noticeable differences in PQ in stores.  As for build, I've never looked close enough as I've never got past the picture.

If you want to go 50" the samsung pn50a450 is now priced at $999 and goes lower at times. It is a great hdtv with excellent color and picture  quality. It also has a pc hookup and can display 3D. It is a 720p set but you won't tell the difference between it and a 1080p set. Unless you use Blu Ray and are very close to the TV.  Then you would be hard pressed to tell the difference. If you get the smaller screen you will grow out of it pretty fast and will want to buy the 50" anyway. All hdtv will be in high definition in Feb/09 and that will  be 720p max.

ps  i wouldnt worry too much about the digital tv transition too much.  unless you live in the US.  as far as canada goes we will be happily watching analog signals for at least the next 2 to 3 years.  i would also NEVER buy a demo/floor model.  they run all day everyday from 9 or 10 in the morning until 9 or 10 at night, generally in full brightness torch mode.  after a few months of that they have been aged by years
