10 Questions To Help You Decide Which iPad To Buy
Tomorrow is iPad 2 Day (in the US) and with the arrival of the updated tablet comes question time for the technorati: to buy or not to buy?
The Apple Tax to be paid by Canadians on the edition to arrive in 2 weeks is steep, so many will no doubt be driving across the border to pick up a unit this weekend, but is that really the best idea? Do you *really* need an iPad? Is a first edition unit enough?
Here's a list of questions to ask yourself before you decide which one to buy.
iPad 1 or 2?
Do you need to have the latest and greatest technology to show off to your friends? iPad 2
Do you need to be able to play music and shoot photos and edit movies with your iPad? iPad 2
Do you just want an iPad because everyone says they're cool and you want bigger real estate for your apps? iPad 1
Are you on a budget?iPad 1
WiFi or 3G?
Do you have a newer iPhone with a good data plan? Wifi - with the new update to iOS 4.3, you can turn your iPhone into a personal hotspot and tether other devices to your iPhone's 3G data connection. In other words, you can have your iPad running off your iPhone's internet. Make sure you have a GOOD data plan and you're not doing this in Egypt.
Do you have a Mifi or RocketStick or other personal hotspot device? Wifi
Do you need to have it online all the time (ie you're using it for email while commuting within the city)? 3G if you're going to use the iPad as a business travel device, 3G won't help in the sky and most airports offer Wifi to get online and get your work done.
Are you just going to use it around the house or to watch movies, play offline apps and read archived articles? Wifi
Which memory size 16, 32 or 64?
While a lot of people think of data for their iPads when determining the drive size they need, it's the apps that eat up all your memory. You can store movies and music in your MobileMe or other cloud apps (like AudioGalaxy) to keep your drive space ready to chomp up the app store.
Black or White?
Well, that's up to your own preference.
In the end, I think the perfect iPad is a 32 gig Wifi edition (wouldn't you know, that's what I have). Whether you get edition 1 or 2 of that, well - go back to the top and work it out.
catch the buzz ... pass it on.
