I don’t know about you, but I’m not a fan of washing dishes.  That’s why I treasure my dishwasher.  It acts as my stationed housekeeper (if only it could clean my place too). However, there are a few things to consider before handing over your dirty dishes, pots, and pans to the almighty dishwasher.

Tips to make your dishwasher run better:

Screen Shot 2012-06-21 at 6.36.37 PM.png1)   Make sure to scrap off the bigger food bits, crumbs, etc.  Only to avoid it from getting relocated and stuck onto other dishes.

2)   Avoid overloading your dishwasher with lots (and lots) of dishes, pots, and pans. Much too often, I get too lazy and forget to turn on the dishwasher. As a result, the dirty dishes begin to pile and grow into the mix. BAD MOVE. It makes it harder to clean; therefore you are going to have to run that dishwasher again (and that ain’t eco-friendly). Or wash the dishes all by hand. Ohhhh, that’s no fun.

3)   Remember to clean out the filters. A lot of yucky stuff gets accumulated in that little place. It’s easily removable, so, make sure to get it cleaned (regularly).

4)   More detergent doesn’t mean extra squeaky-clean. My dishwasher handy man got mad at me for using too much detergent. (Oops!) I like using the Cascade All-in-1 ActionPacs and he suggested I use only half of the tablet for each load. I’ve been doing this for years, and it works wonderfully. My dishes are squeaky clean. If you use the liquid or powder detergent, go easy on that stuff (aim for the first line of reference).  Less is more!

5)   Select the right cycle. I usually use the low energy/economy cycle but it’s not always the ideal choice, especially if you’re dealing with greasy pots and pans. Make sure to check your dishwasher manual to figure out the best cycle for each load.

Here's a tip I picked up years ago. If you run out of detergent you can use (safely) baking soda and Borax mixed together. It isn't great for everyday use (I found the dishes weren't as squeaky clean) but in a pinch, it's awesome.

Thanks Tris! I also heard putting a cup of white vinegar into the machine (and letting it run with NO dishes inside). Helps to clean and remove any odor.
