A Look at Dishonored 's The Tales from Dunwall Web Series and the Implicatio ns of Power
As though there wasn't already enough talk about the upcoming stealth-action game, Dishonored, Bethesda has just released yet another in-depth look into the game. Unlike past sneak peeks, The Tales from Dunwall offers a truly imaginative look at the game and is filled with subtle hints at this increasingly cryptic city.
This three-part series was created by Psyop and Rokkan (Bethesda's marketing agency). Each episode was lovingly produced by hand and enhanced with 3D elements to truly bring the painted stories to life. Scored by Daniel Licht (Dexter) and narrated by Chloe Grace Moretz (Kick Ass), The Tales from Dunwall is an intricate, cryptic and beautiful chain of events leading to Corvo's journey.
Here's a quick rundown of the three-part web series if you didn't already get a chance to check them out:
Part 1: 'The Awakening'. This first chapter introduces us to Dunwall, a city in disarray and on the verge of dystopia. 'The Awakening' studies the implications of ambition and how a risky deal can lead to both technological gain and misfortune.
Part 2: ‘The Hand that Feeds’. As cautionary as the last episode, 'The Hand that Feeds' warns the implications of a very different kind of power: the supernatural.
Part 3: ‘In the Mind of Madness’. The final chapter in this three-part series introduces Piero, a key figure in the city of Dunwall, who is haunted by his dreams of reality. These dreams give him the power to create a mask (later to be Corvo's). It's unclear what the implications of using the mask will be, but I'm sure we'll find out soon enough.
It's clear to see, power is a very important theme in each of these episodes, and seems equally important in the game itself. Each of these forboding tales makes me wonder what implications Corvo will have to face by using his supernatural abilities and how it will affect him throughout the game. Arkane Studios have kept those details mum, instead highlighting the gameplay possibilites, but it makes me wonder about those grave consequences...
