If there’s one video game series practically bathing in badassery it’s Darksiders.  Commonly regarded as The Legend of Zelda meets God of War, this action-adventure series offers all the exploration and puzzles you could ever imagine, all while immersing you in its dark, dismal atmosphere.

Darksiders II puts you in the shoes of Death, the most feared of the legendary Four Horsemen.  Set during the events of the last game, Death embarks upon a quest to restore mankind, and redeem his brother War's name. Of course, there's far worse in store, with the Apocalypse being the least of anyone's worries.

With Darksiders II launching in less than a week, Vigil Games and THQ are hard at work putting together pre-order bonuses and goodies for all of their loyal fans.  Last week we got to talk about the Future Shop Exclusive pre-order bonuses and two in-game bonuses for anyone who played the original, but this week we go even deeper and unveil even more surprises in store.

While Darksiders II will feature much of the same content as its predecessor there are a few new modes that will be available to you as well. One of those is The Crucible, a 100 level combat arena, where every successful level is more challenging than the next.  You know the drill.  After every fifth level is defeated, players are offered the chance to reap the rewards and quit or continue on for even greater treasures.  Here’s the catch, if you’re killed before collecting an award, you’re back to square one.

The only way to unlock all the levels is by playing through the main campaign so balancing these two are key to success.  For instance, you will initially be able to play up to Level 25, but no further until you’ve gotten to a certain point in the story.  Each 25 levels has a different theme based on the game’s four main zones.  You’ll be able to fight native enemies and bosses from each of these zones as well as all new Crucible variants.

So what kind of rewards are in store?  Well, I'm not going to give too much away but several legendary items, including Death's ultimate armor, will be rewarded by getting through certain stages, for making it through all 100 levels and for defeating The Crucible in one sitting. By completing this mode you will also unlock the "Death's Mask Avatar" award for XBLA and PSN.  Crucible Mode will offer plenty of unlocks and while it may seem near to impossible sometimes those rewards will definitely be driving you forward.

Another feature to check out will be the Serpent Tomes, an in-game emailing system. That might seem strange at first, but for such an item-driven game this system is all too fitting.  By using the "Tomes" you can send messages to your friends playing and trade up to four items in each email.  Just keep in mind once you trade an item it's gone forever unless you find another or someone trades one back to you.

Last but certainly not least, Darksiders II will feature a Leaderboard system which will track worldwide player ranks in several different categories including: Total Kills, Best Critical, Highest Combos, Highest Combo Damage, Equipped Worth, Fastest Game Completion, Fastest Nightmare Completion, Total Game Completions and Crucible Stat Trackings.

Darksiders II has plenty going for it.  As though the main story weren't already vast enough, there's going to be plenty of replay value what with all the new modes in store.  Whether you're striving to beat one of the final levels in The Crucible, working on getting the highest combo or looking for just the right item to trade for, Darksiders II is looking better than ever.

If you're just as excited as we are, consider pre-ordering at Future Shop.  Don't forget, those pre-order bonuses are Future Shop Exclusives, so don't expect to get them anywhere else!
