A few things to head out with for Labour Day

by Retired Blogger on 09-03-2010 11:52 AM

I'm going to take some time off this Labour Day weekend (on my Honeymoon to be exact), and while I'm not planning on doing any work, that doesn't mean I'm going to untether completely. It isn't just that I want to stay in touch, it's also that I like to write and jot things down, so I need a certain amount of tech with me to do that. Not to mention, I'll be taking pictures, so there is that gear too. Beyond my usual "what I carry in my man-bag" stuff for just being out and about, I'm tossing in:

  • Real, paper books.
  • Point-n-shoot camera (even though I'm going to try using my iPhone a lot).
  • Extra SD cards
  • Special cable for the point-n-shoot

Laptop? Nope. I did just renew my Flickr Pro account (I let it lapse accidentally), but a laptop is one thing I've decided that I don't need. If there are emails that need to be responded too (like the world will end if I don't reply), between the iPhone and iPad, I'm covered. Photo downloading, editing, and posting? Covered. Writing? Covered. Reading, triple covered (iBooks, Kobo app, and paper books).

Is this the sign of geek traveling? That we finally don't need to lug a "giant" (like 15" is giant for a laptop) laptop around just to handle photos or do a little email? I certainly think so. That said, I did spend a few hours on just the iPad and iPhone it isn't perfect…

I did miss the feeling of having several things running at a glance. I do like having Scrivener open to write with and have TweetDeck running so I can glance at it. I like having other things that are like a heads up display. However, I did finish a book proposal in (near) record time because it was just Pages and my music going.

Maybe we're onto something here. Regardless happy long weekend everyone. I might surface on Monday for a quick post, but you never know!

Nice. I'm thinking it's good to cut the tech tether, from time to time.

But baby steps -- we'll be 'reducing' tech time a bit this weekend, not cutting it off.

We're off camping this weekend. Usually we try and go for a place with power, but this time we'll be 'dry'. So, tech will be limited to things with batteries...and no laptops. Just the iPads. We'll see how that goes too!
