Add a Radio To Your iPhone

While one of the big steps with the release of the new iPod Nano this fall was to add a video camera to the unit, the other big push was the inclusion of a radio.

It almost seems like a backwards step in the evolution of the iPod.  Many hail as the iPod as a harbinger for the death of radio.  I mean, why would anyone listen to a radio station "playing what they want" when you can have your iPod plugged in with a personalized Genius Mix of your favourites?

I asked a question to the Twittersphere along those lines yesterday and while many appreciate the ability to program their own tunes with an iPod, the ability to discover new music and be treated to unpredictable musical surprises still draws people back to the dial.

Apple most likely recognizes radio's ability to give exposure to new music and introduced the ability to tag songs as they play on your iPod to later purchase when you're synced to iTunes.

The iPhone still doesn't have a radio in it, but there are numerous radio apps to get streaming on your device.  CBC, NPR, official radio station ones, bulk streaming ones.  Some are only in the US iTunes store blocking you out of a long list of stations, but I've found a brililant global radio streaming app that will also double as a clock radio. (bonus!)

TimeTuner lets you preset 4 radio stations from a list of more than 14 000 from anywhere in the world.  The list of stations is broken down by format, language, geography or it can use the onboard GPS in your phone to scan for stations in your city (perfect for when you're travelling).

Trick out your car with a direct input between your iPhone and dash (like the new Kia Soul) and you can drive the Deerfoot Trail in Calgary flipping between Amp Radio Calgary and Amp Radio in LA

Perfect for people who are on the move and want to listen to favourite radio programs from their home town.  Imagine walking around Vancouver while on vacation but still able to catch the play by play of your lowly Leafs while they drone through a road trip.

TimeTuner is in the iTunes App Store.

catch the buzz .. pass it on.
