In just under two a half years the mobile phenomenon Angry Birds has achieved over one billion downloads, Rovio announced today.

That figure includes sales of the wildly popular Angry Birds along with its spin-offs Angry Birds Seasons, Angry Birds Rio, and its successor, Angry Birds Space.

Looking strictly at number of units sold, the bird-flinging strategy game that has trailblazed a path on major mobile platforms such as Apple's iOS and Google's Android is the best-selling video game franchise of all time.  While it's hard to fathom, the Angry Birds franchise has sold more units than popular video game franchises such as Super Mario, Pokémon, Grand Theft Auto, Call of Duty, Sonic the Hedgehog, Legend of Zelda, and even Tetris, a game that's been ported to just about every platform imaginable (source).

Not that Rovio needed to gloat, but to commemorate this incredible sales feat the company release this whimsical clip:

Not surprising, when Apple released their all-time paid best selling app this past March, the top selling iPhone game was Angry Birds.  Also ranking in the top ten best apps of all-time were Angry Birds Seasons and Angry Birds Rio, two game extension in the Angry Birds franchise that have each sold in the multi-millions. Unsurprisingly, three Angry Birds games also ranked in the all-time top ten paid iPad apps.

In addition to the tremendous Angry Birds sales number, developer Rovio announced this week that the company generated $106.3 million in revenue in 2011, with earnings before tax amounting to $67.6 million. In addition to game downloads, the revenue figure includes merchandising and licensing activities which account for thirty percent of total revenue. Monthly average users of the original Angry Birds game has now surpassed 200 million, and the game has been downloaded 648 million times.

The 2011 revenue figures marks a significant jump from the previous year, where it's estimated that Rovio took in approximately $10 million dollars.

To help broaden its mobile portfolio, yesterday Rovio announced that the company will port its newest game, Angry Birds Space, over to the Windows Phone platform.

While surely there are many reasons to consider picking up a mobile smart phone, based on the tremendous popularity it seems Angry Birds may be a good contributing reason.  For more information on the range of available Apple products capable of downloading Angry Birds, be sure to check out Future Shop's Apple special store.
