Earlier today a friend shared a video about this low-tech thing called a ‘Book’.
It’s
a cool video, especially if you’re a book lover (I’ve embedded it
below), but the thing that struck me was that the only way to view or
consume the lesson being taught was by using a high tech device such as a
computer, media-centre, data phone or tablet. The message of the video
contradicts the requirement for technology needed to view the video.
The
video is cute, the artistic stylings engaging and the writing
entertaining, but the bottom line for me is, yes, it’s a book, but it’s a
limited form of analog media. Let’s not over ‘nostagize’ (yes, a new
word, it’s Friday, I get to make ‘em up), and romanticize it.
The
book does one thing very very well, and yes, it may one day be replaced
by tech devices, but only because the function performed by the book
can now be done by other multi-function devices, perhaps in some ways
done better.
It’s
ironic, this video. The only ones who can appreciate the message, are
the ones who already understand the value of digital media, and of
analog. I’m not sure this is what the producers intended...or did I miss
the point
Watch the video and let me know what you think...
