Apple WWDC Forecast: Mostly Software With A Chance of iClouds
The next big announcement from Apple is slated for Monday at the start of WWDC. In the past few years, this pre-summer announcement has been the launch of a new iPhone. The rumour mill is pointing to a fall, if at all, launch for a new iPhone (traditionally the iPod timing) which means this announcement will go a different direction.
A press release from Cupertino admits as much with the headline pointing to next generations software as the focus for the upcoming Stevenote.
At the keynote, Apple will unveil its next generation software - Lion, the eighth major release of Mac OS® X; iOS 5, the next version of Apple’s advanced mobile operating system which powers the iPad®, iPhone® and iPod touch®; and iCloud®, Apple’s upcoming cloud services offering. [source]
Lion was already on our radar, Steve unveiled that late last year when they went Back to the Mac. It's the iCloud part of the software announcement that has everyone excited at what Apple has up its sleeve.
Some are calling it the next iteration of MobileMe, an online storage and synching system that has never worked in the way that Steve Jobs had wanted.
Will it include an online storage system for iTunes? Will it include wireless synching of data and iDevices (eliminating the iTunes tether)? Will it be the free service some thought MobileMe should have been? Will Apple's suite of productivity software being moving from the desktop to the iCloud?
We'll find out on Monday.
