Apple's Next Coup: OS X–iOS hybrid machine

According to Ars Technica—Apple looking at dual-mode touchscreen desktops and laptops—and The Next Web—Apple looks to patent iMac Touch, features both OS X and iOS?—Apple has filed patents for an iMac–like device that when titled switches from OS X to iOS. Or at least that's how it looks. Now, if you're thinking what I'm thinking, this could be Apple's next big coup. Yeah, OS X is easy to use, but the iPad and the larger screen iOS takes everything to a new level. Or are we seeing the end of OS X as we know it?

I'm thinking the former and not the later. Sure, maybe changing the OS entirely might not really be in the cards, but titling to activate a touch system? Or a screen that is always touch-sensitive? Apple has probably had a series of plans in the works since the success of the first iPhone all working towards a singular goal: making easy to use computers ubiquitous.

First you have a phone/internet device/information tool that changes how we look at smartphones. Then launch a tablet that is really the first usable tablet computer. What's next? A laptop or desktop computer that bridges that gap? Maybe working of the idea of Air Screen where my iPad is used as a separate screen for my MacBook … but what if it became not really a screen, but an extension of the computer as an input device? Like a giant mouse or trackpad…but more?

You see, I think Apple is really onto something here. And man I think it's going to be awesome.
