It was no real secret that it would happen today, but Apple officially raised the curtain on its new iPad 2 tablet today at an event in San Francisco. A launch date for Canada on March 25 has been confirmed as well, despite rumours of a delay, and pricing has been set as well. The iPad 2 officially goes on sale at 5:00 PM local time on Friday.

Dubbing 2010 the “Year of the iPad” and 2011 as the “Year of the copycats”, the event initially began with Steve Jobs surprising the crowd by leading the keynote, while also gushing about the impact the original iPad has had on everyone from students, doctors, DJs and in business.

On paper, the iPad 2 looks to be a definite improvement over the original. It will have a new A5 dual-core processor to double the CPU speed, up to 9x faster graphics and be one-third thinner in size. It will also weigh slightly less at 1.3 lbs., compared to the 1.5 of the original. Jobs made a point of saying that the iPad 2 is actually thinner than the iPhone 4 is. It will also come in black and white, with Jobs stating that there won’t be the kind of production delays that hurt the white iPhone 4.

The tablet also has two cameras, one front and one rear-facing. Apple will include Photo Booth, which will have the same capabilities as that on the Mac, except effects can be manipulated by using touch. Naturally, FaceTime is also being added in, and will allow for calls between iPads and iPhones or Macs.

The iPad 2 also has HDMI-out capability using an adapter that has two ports: one for HDMI cables, and another for to use the charger. This means you can do whatever you want on a monitor or TV and charge the device at the same time.

What will stay the same as the original iPad are the battery life (10 hours), screen size, capacity (16GB, 32GB and 64GB) and pricing. Rumours of two models with different screen sizes clearly didn’t materialize today.

Smart covers are new — “not a case” as Jobs insists — but rather a nifty cover that attaches to the iPad 2 using magnets. It can flip a number of ways to prop the device up for use in a variety of situations. They will come in either polyurethane or leather.

Apple also showed off iOS 4.3, which includes faster Safari browsing, iTunes home sharing to share content between the iPad and Mac. Airplay has also been improved to allow for video, audio from the web, as well as apps to work with the Apple TV. The iPhone 4 will also gain the ability to turn its 3G connection into a Wi-Fi hotspot, but there are no details yet on what Canadian carriers will do about that.

An iPad version of iMovie was also demoed, and will allow for precision editing, multitrack audio recordings, Airplay to Apple TV and HD playback. Uploading and sharing on YouTube, Facebook and Vimeo are part of the mix too. A version of GarageBand was also shown, utilizing touch capabilities with instruments. The options are quite extensive, and it’s likely that musicians, both aspiring and established, might make use of this. It will be ready to buy and download for $4.99 on March 11.

So, the iPad 2 pricing shapes up like this:

$519 for the 16GB model (Wi-Fi only)

$619 for the 32GB model (Wi-Fi only)

$719 for the 64GB model (Wi-Fi only)

The 3G + Wi-Fi models will be going for $649, $749 and $849, respectively. You’re basically paying an extra $130 premium (before taxes) to get 3G access. If you have a smartphone that act as a mobile hotspot, you should probably be fine with a Wi-Fi-only model.

actually, the pricing is known. steve jobs emphasized that the ipad 2 will be the EXACT same pricing as the original ipad. whoever covered the story for you guys needs to be replaced.

Can I trade My old iPad in for the new one??!!! If not, that would be a terrific deal. I know (competitor) is doing the same idea. I think this would be a great way to getting people to buy the new one. People will not buy it if there old iPad is not even one year old!

If I have the old iPad and only had it for almost 2 and a half months and I still ave the recipt can I exchange it for the ipad 2
by Blogger on 03-02-2011 06:52 PM

To sean27, I'm the author of the post.

The reason I mentioned that Canadian pricing isn't known is because we don't know for sure if Apple will bump up the prices by $50 for Canada, like they did last year. The exchange rate is at par, and has been for a while, so there is speculation that perhaps pricing will be the same on both sides of the border. We'll find out soon enough.

by Janus69 on 03-02-2011 11:45 PM

$50 more?  Oh please, the Canadian Dollar is higher and what happened to "Free Trade"  you people should be running pre-order anyway

Improvements are always nice, but I really hate the slogan I'm seeing "iPad 2: Even more magic and revolutionary". I mean, read that over. Such terms by Apple have been overused sooooo much it's tiring me. I'd rather hear something like "iPad 2: It's better". That'd be a good laugh. But no, seriously, I really don't like that slogan.

You can't say that it will double it's CPU speed, as other resources like RAM, disk and I/O still limit all multicore processors.  Not to mention knowing Apple and their SDK I am sure they will be the ones to decide which process is run on each processor, and their for scheduling decisions are left up to their kernel.

It will most likely improve speeds by about 30-50%

Thanks for the feedback, CraigV. I was just reiterating what Jobs actually said, so whether or not performance will match that in every given process or scenario on the iPad 2 is naturally debatable. We'll find out a few weeks from now.

by willy0275 on 03-03-2011 11:51 AM

Saying it will double CPU speed is totally correct. CPU speed means the frequency of the CPU. It doesn't mean the speed of the device. If Jobs would have said "The iPad 2 will be twice as fast" it would have been a mistake. Jobs carefully chose his words, there's too much at stake to make such a naive mistake.

Will we be able to pre-order the device at Futureshop ?

Ok I'm a rookie with this stuff but really want an Ipad and am waiting until they get the bugs out or improve them...so I was waiting to see what Ipad 2 had to offer.  I have a lot of gadgets...cellphone, laptop, desktop, mini laptop.  I hardly used my cellphone and was hoping to cut costs....get rid of the cellphone, change my internet over to one of those sticks and now I see the Ipad has a USB port I should be able to use the stick for my internet on the Ipad....BUT...can I use the Ipad as a phone????  I know that sounds silly because of it's size and shape but I figured with one of the bluetooth headsets I'd be all set.

Will this work....can I use the Ipad 2 as a cellphone and get rid of a few gadgets and a few bills all at once.  I'm on cable internet at home and will Bell for everything else.  I want to get it all together in the hopes of cutting monthly cost and also allow myself more on the Ipad.

Can one of you less technically challenged people tell me if this is possible????  Many thanks for any help I can get.

Oh..ya...Apple TV...I'm not even sure what that is??  Can I also watch TV on the Ipad...I know I can get some stuff through the internet?

@K2Kraky

The iPad DOES NOT have a USB port. It has a connection for powering it, connecting it to your computer to update it, and you can get photos from your camera to it via the camera connector (sold separately), but IT IS NOT useable otherwise. People have been trying connecting external drives and it does not work. You can't connect anything that draws a lot of power through the USB port because the iPad will either reject it or ignore it.

iPad is not a cellphone. If you get the WiFI only iPad then you need that cable internet connection. If you get the 3G and WiFi, you can in theory drop the cable internet, but keep in mind that 3G costs you about $30 for 250 MB, so it's not a viable option.

Skype MIGHT be possible, but you'd have to see about that. Check the app store.

Apple TV, the new version, gets stuff from the net like NetFlix and "streams" it to your TV. You can get an app for the iPad to watch NetFlix on there if you want to, as well you can upload videos and movies to the iPad in order to see them through iTunes. If you spend, at least to me, a lot of money with Bell or Rogers, you can watch TV on the iPad as well, but, you had better have a high allowance for your account or that will really cost you again.

@TeraS,

Good points. A missing USB port is a major drawback of the iPads -- though you can get some functionality through the Camera Connection Kit (as you mentioned). I've had good luck hooking up USB Microphones and USB / MIDI keyboards through the USB Connector -- and, of course, my cameras (though not USB webcams).

Skype *is* possible, I do it on the iPad daily.

Video - yep, you can download video to the iPad, or Stream it using one of a number of apps in the store. Also, as of the last OS update, you can stream it within your own network from any computer running iTunes.

I guess these things happen when you rush out a product to stay ahead of the competition...

Does FS have guaranteed stock for the 25th?  There's a minimum 4-week delay in the States for all versions of the iPad 2 now.

There are a few articles out today suggesting a strong possibility of a delay of the international launch. While I doubt the launch date of the 25th will be changed I think there might be severe shortages of the iPad 2 here in Canada and elsewhere for a while, maybe even into the summer.

by skyzero on 03-20-2011 09:30 AM

Do any FS associates know if all FS stores will be carrying the full line of iPad2 Accessories on 3/25/2011?  I already have mine, but case selection is slim currently!

So, iPad 2 available on Friday, March 25th at 5:00 p.m.. What time is everyone lining up?

by DonO61 on 03-23-2011 10:31 AM

I have one question, I would like to buy one of these ipad2, I work friday till 4pm I could get to a near by future shop by about 4:45. would I be waisting my time even trying? or could I actually get one at 5pm?

I'm not a huge techy but i do like my electronic toys, just wondering if i should sit back and wait to see what the other tablets are going tobe like, this one from HP looks cool aswell

by JustAnOpinion on 03-23-2011 12:29 PM
Yes.  Be there at 4:45 p.m. sharp. There may be 5 or 6 people in line but its worth the ten minute wait.
by Exalted Expert / Community Ambassador on 03-23-2011 12:30 PM

Hi DonO61,

It's really hard to say as it will ultimately depend on the combination between available stock and the demand.  If you really want one, I'd say try as there may indeed still be some available (especially if each store gets plenty of stock), but if they're sold out, talk to the sales associates to find out when the next shipment is expected in.  It might take a few weeks for the demand to return to normal levels, but if you miss out now, I'm guessing you should be able to find one shortly thereafter, especially if shipments come in on a regular basis (e.g. one to two shipments a week).

by DonO61 on 03-23-2011 02:11 PM

ok, so i'll give it a shot after work friday night, and see what happens. the other option is buying an ipad 1 , because of the price cut.

by faythebest on 03-23-2011 03:10 PM

I will start lining up at the FS on warden & eglinton around 3pm... hope there will not be a huge line up by then...

by 7hrb on 03-23-2011 05:34 PM

Approximately how many units will each store be getting?

by dubmon on 03-23-2011 09:34 PM

Hey folks, I'm not really keen on lining up at my local FS as I recently lined up overnight to get my son into Kindergarten. I'm so done with lineups and would prefer to order online.

On this link (http://community.futureshop.ca/t5/Tech-Blog/Apple-releases-Canadian-pricing-info-for-iPad-2-RIM-taki...) it mentions that FutureShop will probably be accepting orders for the ipad 2 via their website at 1am on Friday.

If I were to order via the FutureShop website, would I be able to pickup the ipad 2 from a local Future Shop the next day?  2 days? 1 week? 2 weeks? 4 to 6 weeks?

My fear with ordering online is that the inventory might not be guaranteed for online ordering with a crazy amount of orders coming from each Future Shop retain location.

Can somebody please clarify?

thx!
