Dorms

Congratulations to all those young, ambitious individuals about to enter university life this September. There is a thrill about moving out of your parent’s house and into a new dorm to start the next chapter in your life.  It’s going to be an amazing journey.

Now, please let me take a moment to bring a touch of reality just to help the transition process. A dorm room won’t be as comfortable (nor private) as it is living in your parent’s home. Plus, it’s likely you’ll be sharing a kitchen and bathroom with a few other friends (or strangers). Basically, no more of your mom’s home cooked meal. You are on your own! Therefore, you’ll need to get a few appliances to cover your basis and help you stay sane for the semester. (It can also help avoid the Freshman 15)

Hands down, you’ll need a coffee machine. You’ll likely be brewing a big pot for your study buddies as you pull all nighters to either get ready for the exam or finish that final assignment.  When it comes to coffee, I like to follow this quote – “Life’s Too Short to Drink Lousy Joe.” For each semester, you’ll be relying on an extra caffeine boost to keep you ahead of your studies.

toaster ovenToaster Oven:

Toast in the morning makes a great breakfast to help start the day. And a toaster oven can help you make healthier meals (which is a better option than cafeteria food). In addition, it can also keep the costs low. I mean, the costs for buying food to cover breakfast, lunch, and dinner will add up faster than expect. A toaster oven is versatile. For breakfast, make toast and add almond butter or low-fat cottage cheese. For lunch, make a nicely toasted sandwich with lots of vegetables. And for dinner, make pizza!

Here’s my cheap and easy recipe for making Pita Pizza:

Ingredient:

-       Pita bread (whole wheat is preferred option)

-       Canned tomato sauce or jarred pizza sauce

-       Dried oregano

-       Shredded mozzarella cheese

-       Veggies (depends on your preference): Mushroom, Peppers, Onions,

-       Cold cuts (depends on your preference): Turkey, Ham, Peperoni, Chicken, etc.

Take a pita bread and add a layer of tomato sauce and sprinkle some dried oregano. Add as much veggies and meats as you desire. Top it off with mozzarella cheese, then pop it into the toaster oven. Bake for 10-15mins.
