Appliances get smarter at CES 2012 thanks to LG's ThinQ technology
How would you like to unpack your perishable groceries into fridge, track the inventory, receive reminders when things are about to expire, then obtain popular recipe recommendations with how to use it? And how about adding another layer by having your oven pre-heat when you're ready to cook the recipe?
This is now a reality thanks to the innovators at LG, who unveiled its Smart ThinQ technology at CES 2012, the company's propriety device-to-device connectivity feature on large appliances.
There are multiple ways to take advantage of LG's latest Smart ThinQ fridge: selecting icons from the LCD panel, voice recognition panel, or by taking a photo of the grocery receipt where the fridge will automatically download the food item list. Barcoded receipts can also be scanned with smartphones to input food items.
A week passes and now it's time to reap the benefits of LG's Smart Manager feature built-in the fridge. Check the status of your grocery inventory and see what perishable foods are about to spoil so you can cook and eat them first.
Not sure what to make with one green pepper and a boneless, skinless chicken breast? No problem. Smart Manager includes a feature that recommends recipes and menus based on the items available in the fridge.
Also, if you're looking to watch what you eat this year, Smart Manager also offers LG's Health Manager. This feature recommends recipe and menus based on personal profiles that take into account physical profiles, including age, gender, weight, height and even body mass index (BMI).
Once you've identified the recipe you'd like to cook from the Smart Manager menu, with a simple push of a button on the fridge, it can transmit necessary information to a LG Smart Oven and automatically start pre-heating the oven based on the recipe's directions. Now that's connected cooking!
Lastly, LG's Smart Access feature allows users to check the status of their LG appliances via mobile devices from anywhere in the world. In the fridge example above, users can check inventory levels of food, and when certain items are low, they can note this and buy the items needing replenishment.
Observing the past three CES' I've attended, each year I'm witnessing the rise of smart appliances. As we race ahead in the connected world, expect to see more appliances offer computer-driven features that make our lives easier.
'Blast Chiller' unveiled by LG: Cry party foul no longer
No need to bark at your friends who drink the last beer in your fridge and complain about drinking a warm one from a fresh 'two-four' stored in the garage. LG has launched an award-winning French-door fridge with "Blast Chiller" feature. In just five minutes, a compartment that can fit two 355mL beverage cans or one bottle of wine will crank up the cool and have your next sip cold.
