With fairytale film adaptations all the rage, it's no wonder Snow White was the next in line for a blockbuster makeover.  In his directorial debut, Rupert Sanders takes the helm of this tale and makes it darker, prettier and more action-packed than ever before.

Without going too far into the plot, it's quite dense when you try to wrap your head around it, this is the same tale you've heard a million times before. The story begins in a tranquil kingdom ruled by King Magnus, Snow White's (Kristen Stewart) father. The kingdom is later corrupted by the evil sorceress Queen Ravenna (played by the outstanding Charlize Theron) who kills the king and takes full control.  While locked up for several years, Snow White later flees the kingdom to search for her brother, but not without implications.  Ravenna knows she can never rule forever unless she gets rid of Snow White so she hires a Huntsman (Chris Hemsworth) to track her down.

This adaptation of the story offers a few changes that try to be new and different, even if they are from pre-existing ideas.  In certain ways they keep the story feeling fresh and exciting, and keep you entertained even during its longer moments (the film is just over 2 hours).  While the story lacks anything grippingly unique, Sanders manages to create a genuinely dark tale, just as the Brothers Grimm had originally intended.

Aside from the dark aesthetic, however, there's never really much depth or heart to the story.  While fairytales tend to offer more purpose and meaning, none of the characters in Snow White and the Huntsman seem to offer much of one -- this even goes for Ravenna who, while an amazing role, doesn't offer us enough reason to think about her true intent, only that she is wholly evil.  While the sights and sounds can easily distract you from any of that, some heart would have been a welcome surprise.

As mentioned, the visuals in Snow White and the Huntsman are absolutely flawless.  Probably one of the most impressive parts of this film, the CG visuals blend meticulously into the backdrop, and provides a truly fantastical look.  The mirror scenes in particular were ones I truly admired for both their creativity and fantastical realism.  Combine these impressive visuals with a Blu-ray copy of the film and you've got yourself one beautiful experience.

Just like all Blu-ray copies, there are several exclusive features worth checking out including a kingdom set tour, character profiles and a full-length featurette.  In addition to getting a blu-ray copy of the film you also get a DVD and digital copy as well so you can watch anytime, anywhere.

I don't think Snow White and the Huntsman was ever meant to be one of the most profound fairytale film adaptations. While it lacks the depth and magic that makes some of the best fairytale films soar above competition, it still offers a compelling visual experience for those curious to see it.
