CES 2012 Day 1: Sharp, Canon, Sony, Monster and Fuji
Before I break down what we saw, have a look at the setup for our crew. We have 2 cameras shooting each of our interviews. They're hard wired to a mixing board that does live switching between the interview subject and tight shots of the products. This live switching is captured directly into a Macbook which then trims the edit instantly.
In a controlled setting, our crew had videos edited and posted to YouTube within 10 minutes, on the show floor at CES things are proving a challenge. It is impossible to get a connection off the floor at the Las Vegas Convention Centre. So we're running the produced videos to the press room for upload, our turnaround time is still incredible thanks to this great crew.
SHARP
The race to have the biggest flat panel display on the show floor has slowed. Everyone knows we can go big, now they're trying to go better. Sharp is celebrating their 100th anniversary in 2012 and is making a splash with an 85" 8k screen. [watch interview]
Your current HD TV most likely has 1080p. Many of the exhibitors are talking about 4k (4000 lines of resolution), Sharp is doubling that. Never mind 3d, these images are so crisp it's almost like "real d".
Sharp is also trying to make 60" the new 40" when it comes to displays. The resolution is so clear on the panels that you can actually have a bigger display in a smaller space. It won't hurt your eyes. Look for an app to help you pick the right panel for your space, but know this: 60 to 80 inch displays are about to be the norm.
Sharp's "hey look what we can do" entry for the CES show floor was a gaggle of models carrying displays. Yes, portable panels. The 20" model of the Aquos Freestyle comes with a handle and weighs just 5 pounds. It gets a wireless signal to broadcast and can run for about 2 hours off the battery.
But that's not the only portable model. You can even lift the 25 pound 40" unit off the wall to bring between the bedroom, the backyard or the basement. Sharp brags that they can hang on just a nail in the wall and they're already on sale in Japan. [watch interview]
CANON
Canon made noise on the show floor with their new Digic 5 processor that brings incredible low light performace. The Powershot G1X impresses with an ISO of 12 800. The point and shoot's arrow agains the increase dominance of the Smartphone camera is in the low light arena. Bigger sensors are replacing the push towards more megapixels and the result is clearer images.
Canon unveiled new models in their Elph line at just 3/4 of an inch thick and fun features like facial recognition to help pick family members out in a crowd. [watch interview]
The Vixia line of camcorders got a touch of WiFi connectivity added this year. 4 of the 6 models are able to connect to iOS devices to access YouTube or Facebook for posting your videos directly.
SONY
Sony wowed the crowds with Kelly Clarkson and Will Smith during their press conference and is bringing a theme of connectivity to the show floor.
The phrase "Play. Watch. Listen. Share." was plastered everywhere in the Sony booth as they unveiled their way of bringing all your entertainment to all your devices. Play Memories Online is one of those technologies that syncs your photos across the cloud using Google products. Instead of having the photos immediately on each device, they're in a cloud folder accessible to each device. [watch interview]
A music service, Music Unlimited, is also coming that will allow you to subscribe to a huge library of music for a monthly fee. If you're a fan of indie music, you can use the cloud to store copies of your tracks to be accessible across your devices.
In the TV section they were showing their Crystal LED displays. This is Sony's play for the next generation in display panel technology. There are only 2 sets in the world and the engineers were hovering around this corner of the booth all day. [watch interview]
Alongside the Crystal LED display, Sony is also making a push towards 3D TV without glasses and a launch of Google TV. The Google TV remote is special, it has voice capability and gesture controls.
MONSTER
Fashion is just not for fashion anymore. We express ourselves with the way we dress and the music we listen to, so now that style is coming to headphones. With partnerships announced between Monster and everyone from Gwen Stefani and Nick Cannon to Diesel and Livestrong to Earth, Wind, and Fire and Miles Davis, the headphone manufacturer is showing that headphones are the new perfume - everyone's got a signature style. [watch interview]
It was cool to see Xzibit hanging in the booth not just for a token 20 minute appearance, but actively working the gaming corner of the Monster display talking to fans, posing for pictures and talking up what Monster is doing for the gamer's headsets. [watch interview]
FUJI
Do you need a new camera? Chances are Fuji has announced one you might like. Fuji took the wraps off nearly 2 dozen new camera models this week ranging in price from $89 to an estimated $1700.
The Fuji X-Pro1 is targeted at wedding photographers and portrait takers and features a mirrorless body. Now mirrorless cameras aren't new, but by taking it out of a DSLR, the body is now thinner. [watch interview]
The other models that were upgraded at CES include the JX580, which will offer up 16 megapixels, 5x optical zoom and a three-inch LCD for $119, when it drops in February. The JX500 will be hitting the same month for $99, bringing 14 megapixels, 5x optical zoom and a 2.7-inch LCD. The AX550 brings 16 megapixels and 5x optical zoom. It'll be hitting in March for $89. All three slim cameras feature intelligent flash, tracking auto focus and scene recognition auto.
The FinePix XP150 and XP100 do the rugged thing, shockproof, freezeproof, dustproof and waterproof to 33 feet. The XP50, meanwhile, is also durable -- albeit slightly less so. All three cameras shoot 1080p video and have dual image stabilization and tracking autofocus. The XP150 also brings GPS and geo-tagging to the table. The three cameras will hit in March for $279, $259 and $199. [Engadget]
Tomorrow is a big day where the highlights include Samsung's incredibly thin 3mm panel. Our sound editors will be on full alert tomorrow as well since Justin Bieber will be making an appearance on the show floor.
