CES 2012: Ultrabooks are ultra cool
Heading into CES 2012 a lot of hype swirled on what the industry is labeling "ultrabooks." So what is this? Simply consider it a super-thin laptop with the high-end specifications. In the tech era where thinner, lighter and faster is better, ultrabooks are ultra cool and practical.
Big names in the business, from Samsung and Toshiba, to Acer and Hewlett-Packard were showcasing their versions of ultrabooks.
After logging 33,000 hours to develop the Samsung Series 9 Notebooks (ultrabooks) pack a lot of punch, such as "MaxScreen" technology. Similar to their HDTVs minimizing the bezel around the screen, MaxScreen offers more real estate on this 15" premium ultrabook. Aside from being the world's thinnest and most compact 15" premium ultrabook, this size weighs-in at just 3.5 lbs. The 13" Series 9 ultrabook weighs a mere 2.5 lbs.
Over at Toshiba's booth, a big draw is their Satellite Ultrabook with Ivy Bridge processor. This compact ultrabook measures 14" and in addition to multiple USB ports, will feature an HDMI port and chiclet-style keyboard.
Both ultrabooks are expected to launch later this year.
It's nice to see the laptop evolve to the thin, sexy state it's now become. I think it's time for me to get an upgrade - but (*sigh*), I say that every year upon seeing the industry's latest and best tech at CES.
