So, Twitter's been a little flakey lately. Earlier today Twitter said I had sent about 880 tweets. Which is a little off the mark of the 25,000+ that I've actually sent. Sure the number is back now (and honestly I don't really care), but Twitter's issues while they improve things kinda reminds me of hiring the Three Stooges to renovate your house. In theory, they are supposed to make things better, but in the process they might burn the whole place down. From where I sit I have to wonder if Twitter has something really awesome up their sleeve (that requires tearing the place down to pull off) or if they've all just gotten in over their head.
No, no, this isn't going to be a "Twitter is doomed" or "Let's all leave Twitter" rant, this just (again) stepping back and trying to figure out what this very popular service is up to. There are smart people at Twitter, that's a pretty sure bet. Their plan to monetize things through ads, well I'm not seeing a lot of action on that front. The fact that some unknown number of people aren't even included in Twitter search results (including yours truly), is pretty…odd. Then there is the love-hate relationship they have with people who have been "filling in the holes" in their service. I just can't make heads or tails of where they are going and when you can't really tell where a company is going you have to wonder if they are heading for trouble.
In reality I think Twitter is just going through some growing pains. I think they will need to keep their eye on the ball if they want to stay ahead of Facebook or some player to be named later. We all use the example of Friendster as something that was hot, then suddenly beyond not. Let's hope Twitter doesn't become the next anecdote.
