Canadian Navy ship sets sail with $5K donation from Future Shop
Hours before the Canadian Forces Navy’s HMCS Vancouver ship set sail from Victoria, BC for the Mediterranean Sea on Sunday, July 10, 2011 to participate in the NATO-led mission in Libya, crew from Future Shop’s Langford store and headquarters staff visited the Navy base to provide a generous care package worth $5,000. A 40” Sony Bravia HDTV, digital camera and a mountain of entertainment goodies ranging from consoles, handhelds, games and accessories were donated by Future Shop, surprising 250 crew members onboard.
“The donation will be a big hit with the crew. We’ve already had a lot of positive comments,” said Mark Zwanski, spokesman, Friends of Vancouver to HMCS Vancouver. “I’d like to thank Future Shop – they’ve done a great job coming through with this donation. It’s great having them onboard.”
The ship replaces HMCS Charlottetown, which has been on patrol with NATO forces in Libya since spring 2011.
“I used to be in the Navy for three years, and I volunteered today to see these folks off,” said Dan Anderson, Product Expert – Home Office at Future Shop's Langford store. “Future Shop’s donation will go a long way. The ship’s company will use the items during their downtime – it will make their lives sailing a bit easier.”
I had a chance to be a part of the presenting group from Future Shop and it was an awesome experience being aboard the HMCS Vancouver Navy ship. The best part by far was seeing the reactions from the Commander and crew onboard. Clearly, they're gamers and movies buffs, and the items will go a long way.
