We’ve covered the new Linksys app-enabled routers from Cisco already but there haven’t really been many apps to take for a spin yet. Recently Cisco announced the Linksys Developer Community to help encourage and connect app developers and kickstart Cisco’s app ecosystem for it's Smart Wi-Fi router series.
Along with that announcement comes six new third party apps, each from a different publisher, all built specifically for these routers. The idea here is to make development simpler with community support and direct support for improved quality and testing. We’ve seen throughout the history of the tech world, if you make things easier for developers and help them deliver quality content then everyone wins. Lets take a look at the new apps that Linksys app-enabled router owners can take for a spin.
Block the Bad Stuff
This iOS app from Fresh Consulting helps with safe surfing through Linksys Smart Wi-Fi routers. The idea is to make it easy to protect all your networked devices from dubious or vulnerable sites and content.
HipPlay
This iOS app by Axentra lets you share and play your multimedia files through your network. It's effectively a universal digital media aggregator and player leveraging your photos, videos, and music.
Gemini IP Camera Viewer
Gemini Solutions developed this iOS app for iPhone to enable home monitoring from anywhere you have web access. You can set up a camera at home and check in on it at any time with ease.
Twonky Video
This app by Packet Video is available for both Android and iOS platforms. It lets you browse online video services from your tablet or smartphone then ‘beam’ the video stream to your Smart TV or AirPlay devices using DLNA.
Device Monitoring
Xoriant’s iOS app will watch your network for connected devices then provides real-time status updates about them. It can, for example, notify you when a particular device goes online, or track uptime.
NetProofer
Android and iOS users can check out Stratedge & Androitent’s app. This one is to help parents control and restrict web access for all users on a per-device basis.
If you want a maximum performance, high-speed wireless home network, then this router is for you. The Linksys EA4500 provides best-in-class speed and wireless performance, making it ideal for HD video streaming and online gaming, even in larger, multi-room homes. It's also great for connecting multiple devices, like TVs, Blu-ray players, and game consoles.
