Connecting with the Slingbox Pro-HD: Internet TV in high-def is uber cool
I had the fantastic fortune of checking out Sling Media’s Slingbox Pro-HD recently, and boy, was I impressed. The Slingbox Pro-HD allows you to do is stream your favourite TV programs from your PVR at home to a connected device like a smartphone, tablet or laptop anywhere you are. As long as you have a broadband internet connection, you can watch fun moments on the tube like the Vancouver Canucks winning in the Stanley Cup Finals, or Jose Baustista of the Toronto Blue Jays belting another home run in another room of your home, or from the other side of the world.
I enjoy how the Slingbox Pro-HD lets you watch your favourite TV shows from home to just about connected device with a screen. The HD quality is crisp and looks amazing on smaller screens of a laptop, tablet or smartphone. My trial was done on my 46” Samsung LED HDTV and iPhone 4 using SlingPlayer Mobile software, which convenient covers off the other connected devices, including platforms on Android, iPod Touch and BlackBerry.
If you’re a traveler like me, you’ll enjoy how you can connect your device to a broadband network (e.g. wifi setting on your smartphone), wherever you are, and either watch your beloved TV program in real-time, or access your PVR and watch the show or game you want to catch up on.
Also, I don’t have a HDTV in my bedroom (I bought into the recommendation of home décor stylists not to invade that private space), so I also appreciate how I can wind down my day with my tablet in hand catching Conan’s opening monologue before getting some zzz’s.
I’ll spare you the nitty-gritty of my set-up details, but its worth knowing setting up the Slingbox Pro-HD is painless. It connects directly to your HDTV, PVR box and home network then you’re ready to go after some easy set-up options.
One snag arose during my trial that was easily corrected: in my condo, my internet hub stems from the front area within a den. What this meant is I couldn’t connect my network cable to the Slingbox Pro-HD right away.
The solution? SlingLink Turbo: it uses in-wall electrical to connect the internet wireless to the Slingbox Pro-HD.
