Controlling Your Online Brand

In the great Facebook land rush of a few weeks ago, many people scrambled to getwhat could be considered the most valuable piece of internet realestate - their real name as a Facebook Username.

"Ahh, justFacebook me."  We say it and hear it all the time.  Meet an old friendat a bar, or try to set up plans with friends for a weekend getaway andyou just tell people to "Facebook me."

Not to go all Seinfeld, but - whatever happened to "just Google it?"

Withthe push to Facebook Usernames, and the opening of Facebook statusmessages, photos and video to be placed, by default, in the public domain, searching Facebook may very well be the first place people goto search when they're looking for more information about potentialdates, co-workers or wedding guests.

But Google is still on thelist, so while you're maintaining your Facebook Username, and keepingthat current, sign up for a Google Profile to make sure you're nevermistaken for your Google Twin

Having the same name as someone else can cause all kind of havoc on theinternet.  Search for one name and come up with all the results relatedto someone entireley different.  If the Google Twin is famous enough, you could be buried pages deep in Google and almost never found whenpeople are doing a search.  Having a Google Profile gets you on thefirst page of that search.

Take my name, for example, there is another Buzz Bishop in the world,my Google Twin.  He went to Cornell and now sells steel in the midwest.  I've tried to emailhim a couple of times, but he has never responded.  I'm honestly notquite sure how he feels about what I've gone and done to his good nameon the internet.

Google Profiles are meant to give you a chanceto stake your claim to your name and put some positive p-r aboutyourself on the first page of Google results.  You tell Google theinformation about you that's unique about you, so it can better sortresults for your name.  So if that Buzz Bishop wants to get on the first page of Google search results for his name, setting up a Google Profile is the way to go.

As with everything in Google, setting up a profile is free, you just need a Google account.

But before you go all crazy filling in every single field on the GoogleProfile form and handing out too much information about yourself, havea read of my previous post about getting robbed by social media.  TheGoogle Profile is just supposed to be a way for you to get an onlinefootprint, take control of your brand and get the message you wantabout yourself to be heard by people searching for you on Google.

catch the buzz ... pass it on.
