On Thursday CCP Games, the masterminds behind the ambitious, player-driven MMO Eve Online, announced that beta registration is now open for their upcoming free-to-play MMOFPS, Dust 514.  The first batch of keys were sent out yesterday to Eve Online players who signed up for the closed beta, with more being released soon -- CCP has also promised a celebration for the lucky few who were selected for the long weekend. That said, an open beta is planned in the coming future, with details most likely being released at next month's E3.

Developed exclusively for the PlayStation 3, Dust 514 takes place in the Eve universe. Events that take place within the game affect the Eve universe as well -- the possibilities for player interaction are practically limitless. CCP is taking a huge risk by both making this game free-to-play and cross-universe, but considering the success of Eve and its immersive player-driven experience, this developer is sure to set an example for developers still too reluctant.

If you haven't already signed up for the beta, you can check it out at the Dust 514 beta registration page

Now where's this Eve player's beta key? Were any of you lucky enough to snag one? If you were, I envy you so much right now.
