The third entry in the Dungeon Siege series, and the first to be published by Square-Enix, will be available in North America on May 31 the company has announced.  Good timing too considering the industry's big E3 Expo, which we all know tends to steal the headline thunder, begins a mere seven days later.

From the makers of Fallout: New Vegas comes an all-new Dungeon Siege adventure incorporating familiar action-RPG elements but this time designed with both consoles and PC in mind.  For the first time in the franchise's history, the next chapter in the Dungeon Siege lore will be presented in hi-definition and available for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC.

“Dungeon Siege has returned and it’s better than ever.  We [Square Enix] have partnered with Obsidian to bring this critically acclaimed classic franchise back in an all new, re-imagined form,” said Ami Blaire, vice president of marketing at Square Enix, Inc.

In Dungeon Siege III players will revisit the kingdom of Ehb, crumbling through years of conflict as the balance of power between factions has fallen apart.  As one of four legionnaires fighting to bring honour to your fallen comrades of the 10th legion, it is up to you to rebuild the once great legion and prevent the land of Ehb from slipping into ruin.

This story-driven adventure can be played solo or up to three friends can join in and assume one of your legionnaire companions.  Thanks to an intelligent AI system, in Dungeon Siege III's co-operative multiplayer mode players can seamlessly drop-in and drop-out without interrupting gameplay or disrupting the campaign.  Each character will possess unique heroic abilities and magic in which to defeat the villains and beasts that plague the land of Ehb.

In case you haven't seen the game in action, here's an HD gameplay trailer:

The two playable characters revealed thus far, and seen in the above trailer, are: Lucas Montbarron, a skilled swordsman and son of the former Grand Master of the Legion; and Anjali, an archon who controls the spirit of fire and raised by friends of the Legion.  Lucus is the master of two combat stances, the first is utilizing a sword and shield, which allows him to attack quickly and stun single targets, and the second is wielding a massive two-handed sword to strike multiple foes and knock them back.  Anjali on the other hand, can shift freely between her human form and a manifestation of elemental fire.  As a human, she fights with a staff or spear, using nimble moves to attack multiple enemies while staying clear of danger.  As a fire spirit, she can blast foes with ranged flames, burn multiple enemies with a flood of heat and fire, or inflict searing pain that causes damage to her victims over time.

With a story created by Obsidian, you can be sure it's every bit as important as in the company's previous titles such as Neverwinter Nights 2 and Knights of the Old Republic 2.  The player's decisions will have an impact on the outcome of the tale with each decision having a short term, mid-term and long term effect on the story.  Choices can determine how characters view you, or affect the way in which they react to you.

Long-time fans of the series will be pleased to know Chris Taylor, creator of the original game and founder of Gas Powered Games, is serving as an advisor for the development of the game.
