Dyson's heater is Hot stuff.

dyson_hot.jpgIt’s clear that I’m a fan of Dyson’s Air Multiplier Fan, not because it’s pricey, but because it’s the best at what it does. I took the time earlier this year to compare it to fans I’ve used and trusted for years, and I’m pleased to say that it absolutely justified the price for me.

For this holiday season Dyson has turned their attention to a truly Canadian niche: the space heater. It doesn’t matter if you’re in the frigid climes of Inuvik, the blanketed Prairies, the blustery East coast, or the truly moist winters of the Lower Mainland, you’ve probably got a space heater tucked away in your home to help stave off colder nights, and to save energy when you don’t want to get your central heating roaring away to warm your whole home.

The result? The Dyson Hot. It’s simply named, beautifully designed, and even goes as far as to improve on some of the Air Multiplier’s best features.

The Dyson Hot has the look and feel of their Air Multiplier - the same blade-less Air Multiplication area, the same solid base design. You snap it together from two pieces in the box, so assembly couldn’t be easier.

Unlike the Air Multiplier, the Dyson Hot doesn’t feature analog controls; it’s all digital AND it features a remote! I LOVE the ability to control the fan and the heater from a distance, and having ten settings for both hot and cold does make the loss of granularity of the dial a bit easier to take. There’s a handy digital ready out that tells you what power setting you’re on, and the LED light changes from red to blue when you turn the heat on or off.

Yes, Dyson has done a fantastic thing for consumers here in releasing the hot with both heating and fan modes. As the summer has been coming to a close on the West coast I’ve needed the fan more than the heater, so it’s fantastic (ha!) that this device does double duty. It’s not as powerful as the Air Multiplier (and if you’re looking for a device that can really cool you off I’ll still recommend the AM over the Hot for summer weather), but it can still cool off a toasty room at even the lowest settings.

Gimme some heat!

The Dyson Hot is the best space heater I’ve ever used, and I’ve been through my share.  I owned the usual suspects throughout university, aside from a single year when I slept six inches from a radiator (it was like living in a sweat lodge).

So I can say, without a doubt, that once again Dyson has put out an incredibly expensive product that’s worth the asking price. Between Apple and Dyson I’m going to need a second loan officer.

image.jpegThe Hot is smart. It spends three minutes “acclimatizing” itself to the room prior to heating; I have no idea what that means outside of the fact that you won’t get much heat during that time. When that time is up, however, it gets down to business and can put out a ridiculous quantity of heat in a very short time. It was able to warm up my average sized bedroom on the one cold night we’ve had so far in under 10 minutes.

Because the heating element is internal the exterior gets hot but not too hot. I still wouldn’t recommend it for a child’s room unless the Hot is kept well out of reach.  While the exterior of the unit accumulated dust (when I didn’t dust it) it managed to avoid that “burning dust” smell when turned on, presumably a combination of the heating element tucked away inside and the 3 minutes of airflow prior to heating.

There’s a cutoff that shuts the heater down if the fan is knocked or tipped over, reducing the risk of fire; that’s a great safety feature that more fans should have.

The unit is also quiet; it’s louder than the Air Multiplier during heating, but still far quieter than every other heater that I own (I’ve got three that are now going to be mothballed... technology marches on!).

The Dyson Hot is going to be a neat gift idea for the holiday season. It’s got all the hallmarks of a cool tech gift: it’s sexy, it does something better than everything else, and it’s actually quite useful. They’ll be on sale on the 30th of September at Future Shop, so Dyson FAN-atics and anyone else looking to take a bite out of Jack Frost can pick one up then (both in-store and online, from what I’m told.
