Facebook Boosting Photos with high res, bulk tagging, and Flash
Who said Facebook was just all about violating our privacy? Turns out Facebook also is about adding useful updates to its most popular features, in this case Photos (Inside Facebook and TNW). Before our pictures were pretty scaled down to 720 pixels, now they can be a nice 2048 pixels, which should be good for most of us. Now, in the tagging department, like you can on Flickr, Facebook will let you bulk tag the pictures to make things a little speedier.
The feature that some folks might raise an eyebrow at is that we can now download uploaded pictures as JPEGs. No, no, I think this is a good idea. I just hope that when (if) I upload pictures to Facebook I can set the Creative Commons license for them. I rely on that feature on Flickr when I'm sourcing pictures to use in posts. I need to make sure that the pictures are okay for commercial use. So I don't mind people downloading my pictures, or even using them, I'd just like to know that folks know my rules.
Now, for other cool stuff, there is a new shadow box view for photos (always appreciated in my book) as well as a nice Flash uploader to help speed things along in the uploading process. Speaking of uploading, even with the 2048 pixel increase a lot of us DLSR folks shoot much, much higher res pics, don't worry, Facebook thought of that too. The pictures are resized client side before the upload starts, so you might start with a giant pic, but what's uploaded isn't so giant. What this means for us shutterbugs is that we don't have to wait for giant pics to be uploaded then resized. Saving time, always a good thing.
Being a Flickr addict myself, I'm not likely to be a heavy user of FB photo tools, but if you're a big fan, let me know what you think of the changes.
