Final Destinatio n 5: Video Interview with Toby Lindala, Special Effects Artist
Ah death, you always come at the most inopportune time. Just when I think we've successfully cheated you for the whole year, on December 27th you arrive on 3D Blu-ray, Blu-ray, and DVD to torment another coterie of twenty-something unsuspecting souls with your sinister agenda. But hey, at least you were gracious enough to allow us to enjoy Christmas before swooping in to reclaim the lives you rightfully feel are yours.
Final Destination 5, like its predecessors, follows the familiar plotline: a young, attractive bunch of friends are on a getaway trip when one member has a premonition of the group's impending death. Using this foreknowledge to avert death, the lot of them are saved, only to find out later that the grim reaper isn't happy when you escape his grasp.
This is a series that isn't so much about where the story will take you, but rather the experience of the ride itself. Of course the hallmark of any Final Destination movie are the over-the-top and gruesome death sequences that often contain elements of comedy, irony and unpredictability all wrapped into one. Final Destination 5 is no exception, and to help explore the ideas and themes of the franchise I had the rare opportunity to meet up with Toby Lindala, one of the most prolific makeup special effects artist in the world and the man responsible for the special effects seen in the film. Since this franchise is all about the visuals, what better way to share with you what we talked about then a video produced exclusively for all of you. Hope you enjoy the interview!
