Get more “green” from your energy efficient appliances
Upgrading to Energy Star® appliances can go a long way to saving on your energy bill at home. Your new washer will use as much as 50 per cent less energy than standard machines. But adopting a few new laundry trips and tricks will help you do even more to protect your family’s health, and the planet’s.
Greener washing
Keep your whites white without chlorine bleach. Chlorine bleach is toxic to manufacture. And once it goes down your drain, it can form organochlorines which are highly toxic to fish. Instead, choose eco-friendly oxygen bleach – it’s chlorine-free. A more affordable solution is to add half a cup of baking soda to your wash.
Greener drying
Save money and energy by hanging your clothes to dry on an indoor rack or clothesline. And lose the fabric softener and dryer sheets. They only work on synthetics, and do nothing for natural fabrics. They coat clothing and towels with a residue which never completely washes out. Many of them are full of synthetic perfumes or fragrances which can trigger allergies, headaches and asthma, and irritate skin. And they end up in nature, where they are harmful to fish and other wildlife. Adding a half-cup of white vinegar to your washing machine’s rinse cycle is a safer solution.
Non-toxic stain solutions
Commercial stain-removing products can be hazardous to our health, wildlife and the environment. They often include chemicals and solvents, including nerve-damaging neurotoxins like benzene or cancer-causing agents like formaldehyde. The good news is that there are many planet-friendly ways to get rid of stains. You already have the ingredients in your kitchen. Say good-bye to those pet stains on your carpet with a combo of eco-friendly dish soap and white vinegar. Spilled your morning java on your favourite white shirt? Blot with club soda. Happy Earth Day,
