GoPro cameras are immensely popular these days because of how they can capture the exhilarating moments in your sporting life in full HD and with amazing clarity. Now, there’s an iOS app to work with the HD Hero2, and Android is going to follow soon.
The app is basically a companion to the camera itself, offering remote control of the settings to record video. This includes turning the camera on or off, live view, remote viewfinder/preview, file counter, battery life and a number of other settings. There’s also a social element to this in sharing videos and photos on a “Video of the Day” site that’s been set up for it.
The connection is made between the two via an ad hoc Wi-Fi connection. They just connect to each other, so there’s no need to have a hotspot or access point that both need to tap into. The Hero2 and Wi-Fi BacPacs require a software update before using the GoPro app.
As for compatibility, all iPhones going back to the 3GS are good, while the iPod Touch 4th gen and above are also good. All versions of the iPad work, but need to be running on iOS 4.3 and 5.0 or above. There has been no official word on whether the experience is any different in iOS 6. The app isn’t compatible with the original HD Hero model. There’s also fine print that states that certain features depicted in the video may come with future software updates. Sharing video on other platforms like YouTube doesn’t seem to be included within the app.
The company had also initially showed a multi-camera control feature that allowed users to capture and coordinate footage from multiple GoPro cameras simultaneously, but that doesn’t appear to be possible with this initial version. Most likely, that will be a feature that comes later on.
Check out the video below to see how it works:
The GoPro HD Hero 2 improves on the game changing GoPro with an array of enhancements and features that make capturing your adventure easier, with amazing video and still image results. New features include vastly-improved low-light shooting, and LCD Interface Mini-HDMI Port, Live streaming, and easy preview and playback on your smartphone. It also comes complete with an array of useful accessories.
