Going Back To Rabbit Ears: How To Get Digital TV For Free
Yesterday was the last day for analog broadcast in Canada - most broadcasters are switching to digital broadcasts for over the air broadcast
While most of us have switched to flat panel tvs and have high definition boxes, pvrs and gadgetry for our cable subscription, 10% of Canadians were still getting local tv over the air - for free.
TV for free? I totally forgot you could do that. Why am I paying hundreds of dollars a year for a cable subscription?
I like my hockey, I like my news - the kinds of things you really need to see live and you can get some of that over the air.
When it comes to episodic programming, the need for immediacy diminishes. Still, the biggest American "shows" are simulcast on local carriers. So apart from specialty channels there's no need for a cable subscription.
My Apple TV can help fill in the gaps in entertainment too. Then there's YouTube, Hulu, and Mobile Apps for different channels (not to mention the vast torrent universe).
While the CRTC is urging those on rabbit ears to get digital boxes, the opposite has happened for me. I'm looking to cut the cord and grab a coathanger for the back of my box. Many flat panels already come with the digital tuner installed, so you just need the antenna out back.
Manny has been doing it for a while and picks up CTV, Global, CBC, CityTV and Omni - all in HD. He has a $10 set of rabbit ears and an old monopole antenna that works fine
What about you? Has this week's change from analog to digital affected you?
