Newsflash: Google Maps isn’t perfect. Yeah, yeah, blinding flash of the obvious. Believe it or not Google knows this and would really like to fix that, so they are asking for our help. Yes, according to the Globe and Mail finally Google Map Maker is now available in Canada.
So now Canadians can not only fix errors on maps (like I don’t know where that Future Shop is near Waterfront Station, it must be invisible or something), but also place points of interest on the map as well. Maybe there is a historic marker or special place in your neighborhood that you think others should know about. Or that there is a great dinner on a stretch of rural road that is a great place to stop for a bite and a break.
We all know how frustrating it is when Google routes you somewhere, but the maps haven’t been updated with new one-way streets or closures or other fun things. Around my neighborhood there are a lot of places where you can’t go through because it’s a bike street and that gets pretty frustrating for drivers. There are also cool things to know like the original Dad’s Cookies was near what is now Vancouver City Hall (there’s a marker at West 10th and Yukon).
So … when you find a problem on Google Maps you can suggest a fix or even suggest something cool.
Ah social media and crowd sourcing at its best.
