I Can't Touch That

I went on a keyboard diet this week.

While I was in the process of using migration assistant to move 300 gigs of data between my old MacBook and new MacBook Pro, I was keyboard-less.  The two computers were talking to each other and couldnt be interrupted for some 72 hours. (I foolishly used Airport instead of a wired solution to sync the machines).

The only way to go online was via my iPhone or iPad.  For 3 days I lived in Steve Jobs' future - the future without keyboards.

I didn't like it.

Maybe it's because I ususally don't like change, but the app world where you can't quickly flip from window to window or app to app can get frustrating. I, like many of you, have attention deficit and work on my MacBook with a cascade of tabs and browsers and programs open on the screen at a time.  I flip between windows every few seconds - you can't efficiently do that on an iPhone or iPad. Working on a touch device demands focus and attention.  You are in one program at a time.  You focus on that because getting out of it, going somewhere else and coming back is going to take a few seconds.  In internet time, that's light years.

Still, I tried but quickly found a workaround.

I found myself sourcing interesting articles and ideas for my radio show and then emailing them to myself.  Sure, I kicked open Google Docs and tried to write out some scripts and arrange some topics, but it didn't work for me. I got frustrated opening and closing apps and programs and cutting and pasting articles from screen to screen.

In the end, I just emailed links to myself and waited until the next day when I would be at the office. In front of a keyboard.

What about you? Are you tethered to a keyboard or have you tried to go touch?

I don't think anyone could use current onscreen keyboards for any sort of heavy typing.   Who knows what the future will hold, but for now either do your heavy typing at a PC/laptop or get yourself a bluetooth keyboard.  The bluetooth keyboard allows you to still be ultra portable but still be able to type where ever you are.

"The bluetooth keyboard allows you to still be ultra portable but still be able to type where ever you are."

So does a netbook.

As for the original topic, the WebOS style app switching (sometimes referred to as card interface) might be worth a look.  BB Playbook and the upcoming Windows Phone 7.5 also use that type of interface.  Even Android Honeycomb's app list is not too bad for switching.

Sometimes Apple people need to go out more.

@takwu why would I want to leave my ecosystem? why would i want to have to double up by buying apps for my tablet that i cant use on my phone?

sometimes playing in one sandbox makes sense.
