If you only have one watch, you always know what time it is. Spring forward Saturday night

by Retired Blogger on 03-12-2010 09:08 AM

There is an old saying, "a man with one watch always knows what time it is, a man with several watches never knows what time it is." This is referring to the nearly impossible task of keeping all your time pieces in sync with each other. If you've manage to get all the clocks in your world to be in sync, I'm sorry to inform you that you're going to be doing some adjusting soon. Daylight savings time starts Saturday night (technically in the wee hours of Sunday morning).

Personally I have a superstition about keeping my machine open and running during the switch. I don't think my MBP will have a silicon aneurysm is it's awake when the time switches, but I don't want to find out. Regardless of my quirk, have you ever stopped to think how many devices you have to adjust for DST?

Yeah you have watches and alarm clocks, plus car clocks and stoves, but that only scratches the surface folks. Don't forget:

  • Digital cameras
  • Video cameras
  • MP3 players
  • TVs
  • DVD players
  • Game consoles
  • Weather stations
  • Digital photo-frames

Oh sure a lot of these devices will update on their own, but I'm always surprised by the ones that don't and I realize (sometimes months later) that the time is wrong. "Wrong" is a relative concept of course.

Oh and for the places that don't participate in the whole clock adjusting ritual, thank you for confusing us for the 2/3 of the year when the clocks are adjusted.

One last place to double check the time: Your blog. Not all blogs make the transition automatically. WordPress blogs will only make the switch IF you have PHP5 running AND you set your timezone to your city under General Settings.

I think I'm going to start putting sticky notes on devices I have to update...

You?
