"What if our greatest heroes became our greatest threat?"  That's the question posed by Injustice: Gods Among Us, one of the most anticipated fighting games of the year for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and Wii U.  The game, which pits some of DC Comics' greatest heroes and most sinister villains against one another, has just received a confirmed release date of April 16 by developer NetherRealm Studios and publisher Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment.

NetherRealm Studios is the development team behind the hugely successful Mortal Kombat franchise which has sold over 28 million games since its debut in 1992, including over 3 million copies of the critically acclaimed Mortal Kombat reboot that released nearly two years ago. With such a talented team behind the new Injustice game, and huge marketing efforts at major gaming events such as E3, ComicCon, and Fan Expo Canada, expectations have been set quite high.

Little is known about the single-player story of Injustice, however NetherRealm has reveal the game will take a dark tone that blurs the line between good and evil.  The dark mood can be seen here in the announcement trailer for Injustice: Gods Among Us:

Like Mortal Kombat, Injustice is a 2D fighting game that features characters and backgrounds that are rendered in three dimensions.  The game will incorporate interactive arenas, many of which have multiple levels that can reached by slamming your opponent through walls, floors and other objects.

Characters come in two sorts, power-types such as Superman and Solomon Grundy and gadget-users like Batman and Deathstroke.  Power characters rely mainly on brute force and power moves, while gadget characters are more nimble and have a wider range of distance attacks.  The two character types can interact with environments in different ways, with for example in Superman's Fortress of Solitude level, gadget characters can smash their opponent's head on a nearby car while power characters can pick up the entire car and use it as a weapon.

The demo shown at ComicCon had 24 character slots and 15 arena slots, though at the time only six characters and two arenas were announced.  Since then, many new characters have been announced, along with additional arenas, in the usual teaser-type manner we're used to with these type of games.  The full list of confirmed characters thus far include:

Bane

Batman

Catwoman

Cyborg

Deathstroke

Flash

Green Arrow

Green Lantern

Harley Quinn

Joker

Lex Luthor

Nightwing

Solomon Grundy

Superman

Wonder Woman

In addition, other characters have been hinted at or have shown up in promotional material, though they have yet to be confirmed.  These characters include Aquaman, Black Adam, Doomsday, Martian Manhunter, Penguin, Raven, Shazam, and Sinestro.

Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment has announced a Collector's Edition of Injustice will be available in Canada, which will include:

- Exclusive DC Collectibles statue featuring iconic characters Batman and Wonder Woman, the Fortress of Solitude, and the Last Son of Krypton’s escape ship

- Special Collector's Edition of the Injustice: Gods Among Us comic book

- The DC Universe animated film Justice League: Doom. (The Xbox 360 edition will include a DVD copy of the film and PS3 edition will include a Blu-ray copy.)

- Three exclusive skins based on Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman from DC COMICS – THE NEW 52

Injustice: Gods Among Us is looking great at this early stage and with plenty of new characters and other surprises to be announced, there should be plenty to talk about as we approach the April launch.

Let us know in the comments which character(s) you hope they announce next!  (my vote goes to Blue Beetle and Lobo!)

Injustice: Gods Among Us is scheduled for release on April 16 and will be available on Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and Nintendo Wii U.  The game is being developed by NetherRealm Studios and published by Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment.

Injustice: Gods Among Us is not yet rated by the ESRB.
