It's beginning to look a lot like Boxing Day

The turkey comas are over and the egg nog is gone so my family and I set my alarm last night to wake up at 5:00 a.m. to catch the savings of another Canadian Christmas tradition: Boxing Day at Future Shop. The result: a fancy new Epson Artisan 835 all-in-one-printer, photo paper and Dynex printer USB cable (not necessarily needed since it's wi-fi, but good have to if or when my network goes down).

Products aside, the best part of my purchases was being in and out of the store in 20 minutes. How did I do this? Why, applying my annual game plan consistenting of three basic steps:

  • Make a list. Just like Santa, I did my research and knew what models of all-in-one printers I wanted. The first one was the Brother MFC-5890CN, but it was online only and I wanted the printer right away, so I opted for my second top choice, the Epson Artisan 835. Sure, my second choice cost more, but it was within my budget and the manufacturer has raving reviews about their printers, so I went for it.
  • Check it twice. O.k., so I had my top printer choices down, but I had to ask myself: "what else do I need?" Answers: colour photo paper and a USB 2.0 printer cable. Phew, good thing I checked on those as with massive crowds Future Shop gets on Boxing Day, it was a nice feeling I'd be avoiding having to make several trips today or through Boxing Week.
  • Know where to park. Since I was at the store well ahead of when other retailers in the plaza opened (6:00 a.m. opposed to 8:00 a.m.), without doing a lap of the parking lot, I parked right by the clothing retailers in one of a few open spaces to avoid losing time.

Following the above strategy, I was in-and-out of the store quickly with enough time to eat a full breakfast and get ready for church with the family. It's been a great Boxing Day so far.

Happy Boxing Day, everyone! May you too have scored deals, rested up and enjoyed time with loved ones.
