LittleBigP lanet 2 Wins Five Guinness World Records
Sony Computer Entertainment's follow-up to the multi-million dollar user-generated platform phenomenon LittleBigPlanet hasn't even been out for a week yet and the sequel has already been awarded with five Guinness World Records. Now before you ooh and aah at the achievement it's worth noting that some of the records are pretty tailored to the game, and one is just blatantly not possible for any other game to win because the award itself contains the name LittleBigPlanet 2. Here's the list:
- Longest marathon playing LittleBigPlanet 2 -- Seriously? In that case every game in existence should win a Guinness Record.
- Longest marathon playing a platform video game -- This one is legit.
- Most video game genres played in one video game in 24 hours -- I'm trying to think of other video games that include multiple genres (excluding PC mods) and all I can come up with are games such as Battletoads which includes platform, puzzle, racing, and flying, and the Sonic games that included isometric and on-rail bonus rounds. Seems completely tailored if you ask me.
- Most user-generated video game levels played in 24 hours -- Hmm, legit. I hope StarCraft II modders jump on this one quick.
- Most user-generated video game levels played in a video game marathon -- Same as above. I'd love to know how long a "video game marathon" is according to Guinness. The Sony event where the records were made lasted three days, is that a marathon? Having a record for most levels played in 24 hours and another for 72 hours just seems redundant to me.
I always thought the point of Guinness records was to recognize true achievement, but it's become pretty clear that the Gamer’s Edition in which these LittleBigPlanet 2 records appear is nothing more than a glorified marketing book for publishers and developers to tout superfluous achievements. I picked up the 2008 Edition way back when and it was certainly an interesting read, but mostly because it chronicled the history of video games quite nicely. Just don't expect any of the records to hold any meaning that's all.
The record-setting event took place on January 17 at 6:00pm EST in the PlayStation Lounge at the Sony Style store in New York City. For those unable to attend in person the entire three day event was streamed live online on the PlayStation Blog and the Guinness World Records' official website. Three hardcore PlayStation gamer headline the gaming marathon -- David Dino (PSN ID: Gevurah22), Sean Crowley (PSN ID: Jaeyden), and Lauren Guiliano (PSN ID: Lugey) -- with fans and developers taking turns occupying the four chair.
“We’d like to congratulate the dedicated group of gamers and the entire LittleBigPlanet 2 team on setting five new Guinness World Records, an impressive accomplishment in such a short period of time,” said Scott A. Steinberg, Vice President of Product Marketing, SCEA.
Perhaps the reason LittleBigPlanet 2 was awarded some blatantly tailored records is because the game's lovable, huggable mascot Sackboy graces the front cover of this year's Edition and has a full spread on the inside. Or maybe the game is just that awesome.
