Madden NFL 13, which hit Future Shop stores nationwide two weeks ago, had a "historic" launch says developer Electronic Arts. The perennial football franchise has long been a top seller for EA, going as far back as the Sega Genesis and Super Nintendo era in the early 90's, and this year the trend continues with sales up 8 percent over last year.
In just one week, Madden NFL 13 has amassed sales exceeding 1.65 million to mark its best-ever showing for this console generation. The game also had an unprecedented launch day, with 900,000 units sold on HD consoles in its first 24 hour.
It wasn't just sales that were up, fan engagement also soared with record numbers going online to play Madden NFL 13. There were more than 1.4 million fans that connected online during the first week, which combined played over 24 million football matches -- an increase of 31 percent year over year. EA says if these matches were played out on the gridiron, it would be the equivalent of staging 47,000 NFL regular seasons in just seven days. To give another example of the game's immense popularity, EA noted that on Labour Day alone, an average of 3,000 Madden NFL 13 contests were started every minute.
"We're thrilled to see the great momentum continuing on Madden NFL 13," said Andrew Wilson, Executive Vice President of EA Sports. "The overwhelming feedback is that this is the best Madden NFL game in a generation. Fans are competing in record numbers, and we expect that type of engagement to only grow with the start of the NFL regular season last night, as fans connect with their favorite teams and players through our game."
Fans in droves took to social media to spread the word about Madden NFL 13, with the Madden NFL Facebook page seeing 1.3 million unique visitors, and on Twitter there were 450,000 mentions, all within the first week.
Madden NFL 13 has been lauded for its new game engine that delivers the most realistic NFL football experience yet. Aggregated reviews of Madden NFL 13 show the largest single-year increase for an EA Sports franchise in four years, according to review aggregate website Metacritic. Madden NFL 13 is out now for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PS Vita, and Nintendo Wii. A version for Nintendo Wii U will also be available some time after the console's launch (expected fall 2012). The game was developed by EA Tiburon and published by EA Sports.
