A large portion of Sony’s cavernous PAX playground was carved out for Empire City’s own hero: Cole MacGrath. After saving Empire City, Cole set out for New Marais (a stand-in for New Orleans) after a nearly fatal battle with The Beast, one of the central plot points of the first game.

Sucker Punch has amped everything up for the second time around, with incredible new powers, and gameplay that flows much more smoothly. While things were slick the first time around, Cole is even more limber in inFamous 2, making it even more of a joy to play.

The play test started with a fight against swamp monsters in the New Marais downtown core; using Cole’s new weapon (it looks like a giant shock prod) you can cut these bad guys to ribbons before taking off in pursuit of an unknown foe. The parkour element of the first game remains, as does the fun wire-riding mechanic. Cutscenes are also much smooth, and they really show the benefits of the motion capture used this time around.

The game looks phenomenal. It’s not due out until 2011, but it’s going to carry PlayStation Move support with it when it lands.
