For me, Instapaper is a great way to collate and collect my ideas and inspirations in one place to read and reflect on later. For those who like to spend a Sunday on the couch with House and Home or Martha Stewart Living, Pinterest solves that need.
Pinterest, is for those who like pictures. For women who flip through magazines, rip out pages because they like a mirror, want to try a recipe or found a new way to curl their hair.
It's a website that helps you collect and organize ideas you find online. From recipes to hairstyles to crafts to photos, Pinterest gathers them all. When you find something you like, you open the site, and 'pin' the snippet to your page. You can tag and organize your ideas by different categories. The site is social too as boards are public for others to view and comment and be inspired turning the entire experience into a very visual sharing space.
When I asked on Twitter what Pinterest was all about and who used it, I was flooded with responses (from women) who raved about the site claiming they get lost in it for hours every day.
After I poked around I quickly discovered that Pinterest is part of the Mars/Venus divide between men and women. Yes, it's beautiful. Yes, it's inspiring. Sure, a couple of things were kind of cute, but I didn't like it.
Pinterest can be very useful as we head into to the Christmas season to pick and pluck ideas for decorating, gifts and entertaining and to have them in one place. Same for weddings. You can sort colours, venues, favours and dresses with ease. Instead of having a folder with ripped pages from magazines, Pinterest lets you take web clippings and pin them together in one place.
