PlayStatio n Vita launches in Japan, North American launch line-up details
The Vita is here! The Vita is here! OK, it’s actually only ‘here’ in Japan, released over this past weekend, and reviews of the Japanese model have been very positive so far (check out The Verge and Engadget’s takes on the console). Meanwhile, North American gamers still have to wait patiently for another two months – the Vita launches in the United States and Canada on February 22nd2012. The Wi-Fi model will be available for $249.99, and as a ‘First Edition’ bundle with a 4GB memory card, game, and case for $299.99. While the delay might be frustrating for some, keep in mind that most of the negatives in the reviews of the Vita have been about its software. Hopefully, by the time that it reaches Canadian shores, Sony will have ironed out all the bugs.
Yesterday, coinciding with this week’s Japanese launch, and to keep up the excitement for the next great handheld, Sony announced the software line-up for the Vita’s North American launch, along with some peripheral and accessory pricing (however the exact price of each game was NOT specified, just a range from $9.99 - $49.99). Sony is boasting that it will be “the biggest and best launch lineup across the history of PlayStation platforms”, and while that is arguable, I will say that the game selection at launch will be pretty good. There will be 25 titles on tap, including UNCHARTED: Golden Abyss, wipEout 2048, and a new version of the PSP classic Lumines.
At launch on February 22nd, you’ll be able to buy the following games below. The games will be available via the PS Vita game cards in stores, and digitally (stored on the Vita’s expensive memory cards) via PSN. In addition, there will be selection of PSN only titles that will probably be sold at the $9.99 price point. I expect the full retail games to range anywhere from $29.99 - $49.99.
Also, those who ordered the Vita First Edition Bundle, which will be available early on February 15th, will be able to buy all the first-party games on that same date, as well as a handful of third-party ones, which I have highlighted in bold.
