Its a great year to be a fan of soccer video games. This year looks like we’re getting one of the best annual crops ever with everyone stepping up their game (no pun intended) and giving us something dramatically better than before. One of the titles to keep an eye on this year is Pro Evolution Soccer 2013, also known as PES’13. Lately the FIFA series has been battling them for dominance, but this isn’t the highlander. There can be more than one. Often this sort of game franchise competition can muddy the waters, resulting in several games that seem more or less the same. Not this time. PES is distinct from FIFA in its particular brand of depth.
PES is notoriously deep and rich. It has a very steep learning curve which can scare off many players new to the series. In comparison FIFA remains much more accessible. With PES you really do need to spend time with it and pay your dues. If you want minute control over every aspect of the matches and how they’re played, this is the game for you.
Its not as simple as moving, passing and shooting, just as the best fighting games aren’t as simple as blocking, punching and kicking. Theres so much more depth to be had here if you’re willing to spend the time digging for it. That isn't to say the game doesn’t attempt to hold players hands and teach them a thing or two - here are certainly tutorials and mini games. If you really want to get the most out of the game though, you’ll want to consider it more of an investment as you learn to finesse the controls and appreciate the nuances. Its one of those situations that can scare off the uninitiated with a high barrier to entry but promises glorious riches within for those brave enough to stick it out.
This is certainly the best PES title in recent memory and long-time fans of the series will surely love it. It offers a unique soccer experience not found with the competitors and enough unique depth to keep players challenged until the inevitable 2014 incarnation.
